Markham mixes heritage main streets with large Cantonese- and Mandarin-speaking communities. Main Street Unionville is the postcard: a historic strip near Toogood Pond and the Varley Art Gallery, which the city runs as its art museum. Markham Village has its own older main street with a restored town hall, and its GO station sits right on Main Street North. The local economy leans on technology and life-sciences companies, with IBM cited as the city's largest employer. The language data reflects this mix: Cantonese and Mandarin were the top two non-official mother tongues in 2021, with Tamil third. York University's Markham Campus has added a university presence downtown.
