Scarborough is Toronto's eastern district, bounded by Victoria Park Avenue, Steeles Avenue, the Rouge River and Lake Ontario. Its six wards held 623,610 people in 2021, almost exactly the same number as in 2016. Since the Second World War it has been one of the main places where new immigrants settle in the region, and it also holds the Scarborough Bluffs, the Toronto Zoo and the Rouge River valley.
Scarborough's landscape is shaped by water. The Bluffs run about 14 kilometres along the lake and rise more than 60 metres in places, Highland Creek drains most of the district, and the Rouge River valley in the east forms part of Rouge National Urban Park. The Toronto Zoo has been in the Rouge valley since 1974. Scarborough Town Centre, one of the largest malls in Canada, sits next to the former civic centre and Albert Campbell Square. The University of Toronto has had a Scarborough campus since 1964, and Centennial College opened here in 1966. Close to half of residents in the six wards grew up speaking a language other than English or French, and 55.5% are immigrants.
