Richmond Hill is a York Region city built along Yonge Street, between Vaughan and Markham, running from Highway 7 north to Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox. It had 202,022 residents in 2021, up 3.6% since 2016, and a median age of 43.6, second only to Burlington's 44.4 among the cities outside Toronto covered here. Mandarin, Cantonese and Iranian Persian were its most common non-official mother tongues.
Richmond Hill's day-to-day life runs along Yonge Street, from the old village core near Mill Pond up to Hillcrest Mall at Carrville Road and on to Oak Ridges. The Highway 7 strip around Leslie Street grew in the 1990s with businesses serving the city's Chinese community. The city's lakes give it a different feel from its neighbours: Lake Wilcox in Oak Ridges has a waterfront park whose boathouse is home to the Richmond Hill Canoe Club, and Mill Pond Park is set for new trails and a bridge under its revitalization plan. The David Dunlap Observatory, home to Canada's largest telescope, is a local landmark. The population skews slightly older than nearby cities, and the language mix of Mandarin, Cantonese and Persian reflects decades of immigration that, in 2021, accounted for 58.2% of residents in private households.
